Vice-President/President Elect

Nita Gill

Adult Service Librarian

Brookings Public Library

Mary Francis

Assistant Professor/Reference Librarian

Dakota State University

One of the strengths we in the library field have is our willingness to share.

We share ideas, projects, concerns, and support. We share with our co- workers and patrons, but also with organizations within our communities and with each other across South Dakota. I believe SDLA is the organization to foster and encourage this strength. This is the main reason I am active with SDLA and running for Vice President/ President Elect.

Not only do I want to make sure I continue to share and communicate, but I also want to encourage other librarians and library staff in SouthDakota to do so too.

I’ve been a member of SDLA since my return to South Dakota six years ago. I’m currently in my second year as recording secretary of the SDLA board. I will continue to participate in SDLA for as long as I’m lucky enough to be a South Dakota librarian.

am running for Vice President / President Elect because I know the South Dakota Library Association has done great things for its members, and I believe as a member it is important to give back to the association.

Libraries are such an important part of theircommunities, no matter what type of community they serve. SDLA provides important connections for those working in libraries, whether it be attending the Annual Conference or Branch Out, reading about events across the state in Book Marks, providing scholarships for professional development, or just instilling a sense of membership to show that we are all a part of something larger than ourselves.

I have taken part in a range of activities to support libraries, and if elected, I will work hard to continue the mission of SDLA and help promote all the ways that the association can aid libraries aid their communities.

Recording Secretary

Craig Johnson

Media Librarian

Augustana University

Stephen Johnson

Business & Distance Education Librarian

University of South Dakota

Craig Johnson is the Media Librarian at Augustana University. He graduated from San Jose State University in 2012 with an MLIS. Craig began his library career as a Library Associate at the University of Sioux Falls in 2010 and moved into the Assistant Librarian position there in 2014. He started working at Augustana University in July of 2016. His library interests are educational technology and professional development.  He is excited for the opportunity to serve in the South Dakota Library Association.

I just finished my 22nd year as the University of South Dakota’s Business and Public Policy Librarian. Here, I work with students and faculty from USD’s School of Business, School of Education as well as the departments of Political Science, Psychology and Criminal Justice.

My motivation for running for SDLA secretary stems from a love recording minutes for USD Library meetings and university committees such as the Athletic Board of Control [which I also chaired for 3-4 years]. As such, it would be a smooth transition to record meeting proceedings for SDLA. I am often drafted to be the acting secretary for a finance and investment student organization at USD called “Coyote Capital Management. I am their “embedded librarian.” Those meetings [and minutes] are complex given that this is a $1.5 million dollar portfolio with many stock transactions, our fiduciary responsibilities to the university foundation along with the acute need for the minutes to “capture the committee’s intent.” A colleague at Oklahoma State really made me feel good when she said my minutes made her feel that she was an active participant at some library technology committee. I hope I can bring these attributes to the South Dakota Library Association as its next secretary.

Support Chair Staff

Evan Waseheck
Techinical Services/ Circulation Assistant

Brookings Public Library

I am running for Support Staff Chair because I was inspired by my first SDLA conference in which I received a Grade 1 Certification. I was immediately impressed by the comradery and common interests in which we all shared for libraries in South Dakota and beyond. I have worked at the Brookings Public Library for over 3 years now and felt like it was my duty to represent others who work in Support Staff positions all over the state. I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University and plan to graduate in December of this year. My library schooling has taught me much about how other libraries (Public, Academic, School, Special) all have different and unique methods of operation, but ultimately the same agenda. That agenda is what I hope to bring to the office of Support Staff Chair, to support the free and open distribution of information. I am also excited to present at Branch Out 2016 and hopefully be directly involved in keeping it a vibrant, welcoming event.
